Greater Bombay Tenants Union was formed on 16th July 1950 during a conference organised to discuss the question of housing shortage in the city. During the Conference a resolution was passed that suggested for rationing of space as a possible solution to the question of housing. The Union was led by people by [[G G Mehta]] and [[Ashok Mehta]] who were active socialist leaders. The Union spearheaded the occupying of the [[Samudra Mahal]] in the same year.
