He was one of the founder members of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha that got formed in the year 1948 and was member of the Congress Socialist Party. He got elected as a BMC Councillor and had played an important role during the Quit India movement in Bombay. In late 1940s he played a crucial role in the formation of the Greater Bombay Tenants Union and was its President. In July 1950 he led a procession of pavement dwellers who were to be evicted from Mahim and occupied the Maharaja of Gwalior's palace known as Samudra Mahal, for which he was arrested. He was also an office bearer of the BEST Workers Union
