Greater Bombay Tenants Union was formed on 16th July 1950 during a conference organised to discuss the question of housing shortage in the city. During the Conference a resolution was passed that suggested for rationing of space as a possible solution to the question of housing. The Union was led by people by G G Mehta and Ashok Mehta who were active socialist leaders. The Union spearheaded the Occupy Samudra Mahal protest in the same year.
