He was one of the founder members of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha that got formed in the year 1948 and was member of the Congress Socialist Party. He got elected as a BMC Councillor and had played an important role during the Quit India movement in Bombay. In late 1940s he played a crucial role in the formation of the Greater Bombay Tenants Union and was its President. In July 1950 he led a procession of pavement dwellers who were to be evicted from Mahim and occupied the Maharaja of Gwalior's palace known as Samudra Mahal, for which he was arrested.
