Slum Census 1976
A slum census in the city of Bombay was conducted on the night of 4th January, 19716 covering the squatters on Government land, Corporation land and land of the State Government Public Undertakings. The census was done by the staff from the office of Additional Collector, Corporation Authorities and the Director of Census Operations. The head of each dwelling unit was asked to submit three copies of the photograph at the time of census and information was collected about the family members and their relationship with the head, employer's address, home town, period of residence in Bombay and the slum area, area in possession, monthly rent paid - etc. Each head of the dwelling unit was issued an identity card with photograph showing necessary details about him and the persons in the dwelling unit and this came to be known as 'photopass'.
