The name "Bombay Africans" is the name given to African slaves from East Africa who were rescued from the slave ships around the Indian Ocean after the abolition of slavery in 1850s. The rescued slaves were sent to missionary institutes around Bombay, Nashik and Poona and some of these Africans settled in Bombay and worked in the maritime industry as sailors, coal trimmers, firemen, or dock workers.
