Vilas Ghogre was a poet and a ballad singer and a prominent activist of the ambedkarite and the left movement in Bombay city. He was born in Pune and shifted to Bombay in 1960s. He was a member of the Avhan Natya Manch a cultural organisation. On 11th July 1997, there was a police firing on residents of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in which ten people died. On 15 July 1997, he committed suicide at his home. But before hanging himself, he wrote on one wall of his home, 'Ambedkari Ekta Jindabad' (Hail Ambedkarite Unity). Vilas Ghogre appears in Anand Patwardhan's films-Bombay-Our City and Jai Bhim Comrade.
