MK Gandhi made him president of the Harijan Sevak Sangh and before that he was member of the Servants of India Society, initialy worked as an Engineer at BMC where he came across the work of scavangers and later associated with them for the uppliftment of their lives. GoI issued a communerative stamp in his honour in the year 1951. In 1915-16. Thakkar Bapa organised Co-operative Societies for sweepers in Bombay. During Gandijhi’s epic fast unto death in 1932, Thakkar Bapa played a singular role in the negotiations which led to the Poona Pact. At Gandhiji’s request, Thakkar Bapa accepted the General Secretaryship of the Harijan Sevak Sangh.
