The revenue survey of Salsette was done by Lieutenant William Tate and submitted as a report to the Directors of the East India Company in the year 1827 including a topographical plan of the island of Salsette drawn on a scale of 2,400 feet: 1 inch and reduced from the Plans of the Revenue Survey. The topographic plan contained the delineation of the boundaries of all the districts, Villages and estates on the island. As per the Report, the Island of Salsette constituted of 13 islands, 7 administrative divisions, contained 107 villages including smaller settlements called pakharis or padas and 7 Estates. The population at that time was given as 55,000.
