The native town refereed to the area outside the boundary of the Fort and included the areas of Byculla, Mazagon and Kamathipura, Kalbadevi, Khetwadi, Mandvi, Bombay Central and Masjid. In the year 1803 there was an outbreak of fire after which a Town Committee was appointed that recommended that a new town be established north of the Fort for the residence of native population. This proposal was a beginning of the racial and class segregation of Bombay.
