The concept of Floor Space Index eas introduced for first time in the year 1964 under the 1964 DCR. It is a town planning technique or a tool that helps in maintaining a balance between the development and available or planned infrastructure. FSI in simple terms determines the extent of construction that is allowed on a particular piece of land. FSI is a ratio of total floor area to the plot area.
