Dock workers were of four types: Mathadis or carriers, Baroots or stackers, naoghanis or lifters, who operated machines and Bhangis or low caste workers who carried cargo others refused to. Baroots were skilled workers from Kutch in Gujarat who would specialised in stacking cargo in the ships. Naoghanis were the most skilled as they were trained to operate pulleys and forklifts which carried heavy cargo like rails and beams.
