Mangal Gadre

was publicly blown with guns at Esplande, now Azad Maidain on 15th October 1857. Charles Forgett the then Police Commissioner claimed to uncover a conspiracy to blow up the fortified township of Bombay and arrested two of its ring leaders-- Sepoy Sayyed Hussein and Sepoy Mangal Gadiya-- who were supposed to be the key instigators and conspirators of the entire perceived plot according to the police. The two were blown from the muzzle of the cannon on the open ground of Esplanade to silence any such further protest possibilities.
