Dhobi Talao is at the farther northern end of what used to be the Esplanade Road and got its name from the fact that Dhobis used to wash clothes since the 18th century. It was partly filled in the year 1860 to make up land for the Framji Cowasji Institute and the later part pf the lake was also filled during the end of the nineteenth century.
