YUVA was founded when a group of students and lecturers from Nirmala Niketan, College of Social Work got together with other like-minded people. Minar Pimple was a central figure. One of the first project at that time involved training of youth from Jogeshwari.
It was formed with a “... one line mandate that we will intervene in any issue of social justice.” It was registered in the year 1984. And in July 1985 as a response to the Olga Tellis judgement formed the Committee of Right to Housing to resist eviction of pavement dwellers.
Although YUVA was also part of NHSS but by late 80s it moved out since it felt that NHSS was moving towards "left of the left". 
YUVA joined the National Campaign of Housing Rights and played the role of its secretariat which focussed on drawing a Housing Rights Bill, and that was a major national level campaign ever taken. Habitat International Coalition was the next step. Worked with pavement dwellers in Wadala, Sion, Parel, Matunga, Mahim and at Jogeshwari, Mankhurd, Dharavi
