Quest was a quarterly and bi-monthly journal published between 1954 and 1975. Quest, edited by Nissim Ezekiel and Dilip Chitre, covered a range of idealogical positions and was committed to open and liberal thought. There are even rumours that the magazine was a CIA plot to fight against the Soviet influence in India.

The magazine had carried original poetry by Jayanta Mahapatra and Dom Moraes. A young sociologist, Ashis Nandy, had had some early essays published here. Film-maker Satyajit Ray’s illustrations appeared alongside a piece called Konarak by Marie Seton, later Ray’s biographer.

“It had disappeared off the map," Prabhala, a writer and researcher, says. “There are no archives to look up—this collection existed in my parents’ home."

excellent book, The Liberal Conspiracy - The Congress for Cultural Freedom and the Struggle for the Mind of Post-War Europe, by far the most authoritative account of the cultural cold war. As for me, I’m holding out for a book that might never, in fact, be written. I have a friend called Michael Vazquez, who, for a long time, edited the revived version of Transition. All he has so far is a title: The Literary Agency - How the CIA created World Literature. Since this is the kind of joke that could get me into trouble, I should reiterate that there is no evidence that editors of publications supported by the Congress for Cultural Freedom knew of the CIA connection, and also that the imbroglio is frankly and fully discussed within the pages of this book.

Bombayana is a term coined by Mumbai writer Altaf Tyrewala, known for Mumbai Noir and No God in Sight. The term refers to the outpouring of grief that follows the announcement of closures of venues known to have existed in "old Bombay" or recall a time when Bombay was a city of modesty and charm, when Irani Cafes were frequented, when poets hung out at Wayside Inn, when artists, lawyers and professionals of all stripes had tea at Cafe Samovar. It could also be a concept or city that existed only in the minds of the people who were around at that time.

<blockquote>For many of my social media contacts, a part of the world came crashing down in January 2014. B Merwan & Co, an Irani café and bakery in Grant Road, had announced its closure. Merwan! Was! Closing! Suddenly, everyone was reminiscing about the bumaskas, masala omelettes, mava cakes and other comfort foods they had imbibed at Merwan. Few among my contacts had been to the bakery in recent times, but that was quickly set right. Never in its 100-year history would Merwan have witnessed such a conglomeration of gizmo-wielding, moneyed hipsters on its premises. The paeans to it were soppy and predictable. Business at the bakery spiked, as golden-hearted, teary-eyed scavengers of Bombayana trooped in to enjoy what they believed were the last delights to be had within Merwan’s old-school confines.

...Like “booksing”, a form of profuse bibliophilia that conceals a deep disregard for the actual act of reading, Bombayana, too, could be a profuse hankering for all things old and sacred about this city without the genuine desire to stem the tsunami of change and redevelopment sweeping through Mumbai.

At some point in its past, Mumbai must have been a metropolis of that sort — a place for humble experiments and manageable risks that most often than not paid off. But in recent decades the city’s myth has grown larger than its lived reality, its taste for modesty has soured. Blame it on shrinking resources, coalition politics, corruption, greed, overpopulation, real estate prices, dubious governance, or security threats — many reasons, one outcome: The systematic reshaping of Mumbai from a welcoming, open-source, commons-blessed metropolitan wonder-land into an increasingly foreboding, stricture-ridden island replete with no-go zones accessible only to the blessed few.

No entry for auto-rickshaws at the international airport’s departure area. No loitering around Gateway of India after 10 p.m. No photography allowed at monuments. No 1 bedroom flats for under 1 crore. Even if a Rhythm House tried to reinvent itself as a live music space, it would first have to surmount the random and petty-minded enforcement of some arcane pre-colonial law, some Protection of Commercial Establishment Act (or whatever) from 1927 (or whenever) prohibiting public performances on retail premises.

Located in Mumbai's iconic art district, Kala Ghoda, on the corner of Rampart Row, and across from Rhythm House, Wayside Inn was restaurant that was home to many influential figures since the 1940s. It was taken over by Maneckji Patel from an Englishwoman in 1933 and offered refuge to radicals, poets, and British and American soldiers.

Dr Ambedkar is said to have dined in the establishment daily and even is rumoured to have written notes for his draft of the Indian Constitution while there. Table no 4 was his favourite, and the year was 1948.

Numerous Bombay poets, particularly the Clearing House poets used to call Wayside Inn Home. In his cycle of Kala Ghoda poems, Arun Kolatkar even paid tribute to the venue in his poem, Breakfast Time at Kala Ghoda. In fact, many poems in the sequence are written as if viewed from a table inside the establishment. For 15 years, Kolatkar sat at Wayside Inn every Thursday afternoon.

Russi Karanjia, Benjamin Horniman and Dinkar Nadkarni also met here to discuss the formation of their revolutionary publication Blitz.

Was forced to shut down in February 2002, unable to survive in a rapidly changing Mumbai landscape.

Widely regarded as one of the great Indian poets of the 20th century, Arun Kolatkar was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1931. Kolatkar let two lives, not just as a art director in the field of advertising but also as a poet. He also operated in both English and Marathi, a fact he ruminated upon himself in his poetry.

His first book in English, Jejuri, a sequence of 31 poems about a trip to the temple town of the same name propelled him to national consciousness. In 1969, his interest in Beatles, Bob Dylan and Blues music leads to him trying his hand at song lyrics. In 1973, with the intention of wanting to break into the international pop scene, he wrote a demo of four songs.

Bombay Hip-Hop grew out of communities on Orkut where people interested in hip-hop would carry out rap battles through text. From the internet they began meeting parks and public places to carry out cyphers, rap battles and b-boying competitions. Mumbai's Finest was one of the first groups that came out of the scene. Divine, one of the members, was signed on to Sony Music India and part of his life formed the basis of Gully Boy. While most of these rappers drew on rappers like Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Eminem as their early influences, they realised they were unable to capture the zeitgeist. That's when some of them began to realise that more hood rappers like Tupac and Biggie and NWO and Ice Cube were using local street lingo to convey the message in their poetry. That's when they decided to shift to Hindi and the multiplicities of languages available to them in Mumbai to rap about their life and struggles.

Chhabildas Movement

The experimental Marathi theatre that found its home in a private school-Chhabildas Lallubhai High School in Dadar Vachanalaya Marg, named after its founder Chhabildas is refered to as the Chabildas movement. It started with the forming of the theatre group Awishkar by actor-director couple of Arvind Deshpande and Sulabha Deshpande along with Arun Kakade. They charged Rs 50 as rent, the the ticket rates started at Rs 5 before eventually going up to Rs 50.
During the mid-seventies, there were several active amateur groups in Bombay and most of them faced the financial crunch and in that context Chhabildas gave them their much-needed outlet and soon the movement flourished. At one time, veterans like Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Amol Palekar and his wife Chitra, Om Puri and Sai Paranjpe, chose to perform there regularly.

Apart from Marathi productions, several Hindi experimental plays were also staged at Chhabildas. Girish Karnad’s Hayavadan was performed by Amol Palekar and Om Puri, while Badal Sircar’s Sari Raat was presented by Dubey. Chhabildas supported Hindi experimental theatre till it shifted to Prithvi Theatre ...............

<blockquote>We opened the space with (C. T.) Khanolkar’s Pratima (Image). The cast comprised Dr Lagoo, Amol Palekar, Deepa Lagoo (then Basrur) and Sulabha. When Jaidev (Hattangadi) came from the National School of Drama, he performed Changuna (the Marathi translation of Lorca’s Yerma). Dubeyji performed Hayavadana (Girish Karnad) with Amol (Palekar), Amrish (Puri), Sunila (Pradhan) and Bapu Kamerkar in the cast. We did Saari Raat. Dubeyji performed Aur Ek Garbo (Yet Another Garbo, a Hindi adaptation of Mahesh Elkunchwar’s Marathi play). They also did Achha Ek Baar Aur (Okay, One More Time, a Hindi adaptation of Mohit Chhattopadhyay’s Bengali play). Bahuroopi performed Rajacha Khel (The King’s Play/ Game, a play by Vrindavan Dandavate), directed by Dilip Kolhatkar and Unmesh (Achyut Vaze’s group) did Chal Re Bhoplya Tunuk Tunuk (Come Little Pumpkin Hoppity-hop, a play by Achyut Vaze). These were the groups that performed in Chhabildas during the first year. Once people realized that they could do work of this sort there, the groups grew in number, and a strong current of new plays began.
On Thursday evenings, families watched the popular film-music show, Chhayageet. People living around Chhabildas would switch it on exactly at the time our shows started. We would have to shut all the windows to keep the sound out. This happened a number of times with Jaidev Hattangadi’s Changuna. Just as we had problems with our neighbours’ noisiness, rarely but occasionally, they too would complain about the noise we created with our activity. But they were mostly supportive. Sometimes someone would shout from across the street, ‘Enough of this now!’ But that was it. They never made trouble for us. They never made any official complaints to the school.
We did a lot of plays in the beginning but gradually, very gradually, the number of shows decreased. Every movement has its ups and downs. Besides which, there were other reasons. First, the consistency and force with which new writing was done once, subsided. Second, as new opportunities beckoned, people went away and the groups disintegrated. But we always welcomed new groups. We made sure the place was open to whoever wanted to perform. We were criticized for this. People said, ‘Anything and everything everything goes at Chhabildas. There is no quality control.’ But we felt that new theatre people with no experience needed to be given that experience. How were they to grow otherwise? The high lasted for about four years. We hadn’t planned for success or failure. We had no idea Chhabildas would become so popular. But highs or lows, it was important to take both in one’s stride. And anyway, it wasn’t a bad thing that the movement petered out. That needs to happen to any movement for it to regain its force. I think we should take these lows in our stride and keep going. When we started Chhabildas, we saw it simply as an effort to create an opportunity for all those who wished to participate in the movement to come together. We had noticed that there was a lot of theatre activity happening in pockets all over the city. We felt this needed to be channelized. That is why we decided to open the space to all. But it was easier said than done. There were a lot of fights over dates. Everyone wanted the weekends. Those who got Thursdays would get very annoyed. On Thursday evenings, families watched the popular film-music show, Chhayageet. People living around Chhabildas would switch it on exactly at the time our shows started. We would have to shut all the windows to keep the sound out. This happened a number of times with Jaidev Hattangadi’s Changuna. We had discussed renovating the place a bit. We had thought we would redo the staircase. The toilets were absolutely horrible. Those could be repaired. We offered to make all the changes, spending from our pockets. The proposal was put before the school committee. But the problem was that the committee had a three-year term. As long as there were teachers and members on it who valued and supported our activity, there was good communication between us. But some new members created trouble for us. Once, a teacher complained at the school’s general body meeting that Chhabildas had become a hotspot for prostitution and drinking. The biggest problem was that we had a contract that needed to be renewed every year before April. The threat of it not being renewed hung over us every April. As the management became less and less interested in supporting us, they made it more and more difficult for us to work there. Eventually, in 1992, they told us they wanted to develop the space commercially and we should vacate it within a month. But yes, they did let us use the space for eighteen long years, for which we must be grateful. It must also be admitted that audience numbers had reduced greatly over the years. I remember some shows which had just ten or twelve people in the audience. Television and other sources of entertainment were perhaps partly responsible. But the quality of the newer plays had also dropped. Prithvi Theatre had started. A lot of experimentation had begun on the commercial stage too by then. A number of actors, writers and directors from the experimental theatre had moved to commercial theatre and were exercising a certain discipline there, changing the ways of working there. They were trying to deliver productions of a certain quality. So the audience must have found that attractive and moved there. Because so many artists from here moved there, a sort of vacuum was created here.

Arun Kakade has been the sole administrative pillar of the oldest active theatre group in Mumbai—Awishkar—since its inception in 1970.In 1970 he, along with Arvind and Sulabha Deshpande, parted ways with Rangayan and founded Awishkar. Arvind Deshpande died prematurely in January 1987, after which Kakade ran the group’s activities single-handedly in the Chhabildas School Hall space they had rented.

<blockquote>The Mumbai Theatre Festival was supposed to start on 12 April 1944. Everything was ready. But on that very day, at around four thirty or five p.m., there was an explosion in the SS Stikine which was lying at harbour in the docks. The city was fraught with rumour and tension. That day’s show was cancelled but the next day, the house was full. Every seat was taken. The audience seemed totally involved in the play. The festival lasted for ten days. Mama Warerkar told us that the producers had made a profit of one and a half lakh rupees on the whole. When the explosion took place in the docks, I was acting in a Gujarati play at the Bhangwadi Theatre. We felt a huge thump. We had no idea what had happened. The audience was terrified and the show had to be brought to an end rapidly. Qasimbhai, the producer, sent someone to accompany me home. All down the road, there were clouds of smoke and a feeling of terror. It was only when I got home that Aai relaxed. ‘Gosh, Babi, the vessels I had placed on the shelf fell off on their own. I don’t know what’s going on,’ she said. Some people thought that Germany or Japan had attacked India. Slowly the news filtered out that there had been an explosion on board a ship. The areas around Mandvi and Masjid Bunder had taken a direct hit. Many ships had been totally destroyed. We heard that the cause was that the ship had been carrying explosives and cotton. By night, the sky was red. It did not seem odd then, that even while one area of the city had been levelled, the next day five thousand Marathi people should come to Chowpatty to see a play. But today, this does seem like something extraordinary. Should one say that it is a big city’s ability to overcome whatever calamity happens? Or could one say that it is simply an insensitive response? Do we simply not care as long as it has happened to someone else? Do we say to ourselves, ‘Let’s bother when it turns up on our doorstep’? Wadi Bunder and Mandvi were struggling desperately with the fire. Did that mean that Girgaon, Parel, Grant Road and Worli should stop whatever they were doing? There seems to be no sense in expecting that. One cannot stop the business of living. But must the show go on? When a calamity hits the city, is it right to have film shows or theatrical performances? When we were young we were taught that even a death next door was reason enough to cancel a celebration or a happy event like a Satyanarayan Pooja. But Mumbaikars seem to have slowly begun to forget their obligations to others.

Born Sushila Lolitkar, she stormed the Gujrati and Marwadi stage in the 40s before eventually retiring at 21. Twenty-two years later, after being christened Vandana Mishra from her marriage to actor writer Pandit Jaydeo Mishra, she returned to the stage as a respectable character actor.

Gold bricks had torn through the roof of someone’s house; someone else had found a treasure trove in the ashes. By the early morning, everyone had picked up whatever tools came to hand and rushed off to the site of the explosion. For the next seven or eight days, this became routine: scavenging for the re-saleable in the debris. No one found the smallest speck of gold but other treasures surfaced. One day someone brought back some huge rolls of white paper on a handcart. His face was aglow with the joy of an Ali Baba. What if the rolls were wet? Our walls, our courtyard were soon swathed in paper hung out to dry. Our homes were filled with the strange smell of paper. When it was dry, it was sold at a handsome rate to a nearby godown. I could have had no idea then that my life would be enjoined with paper.
